Camano: Ca-MAY-no
How do you pronounce Camano?
Ca-MAY-no – use a strong A in Camano and you will get it just right. The
indigenous name for this island is “Kal-lut-chin” meaning “land jutting
into a bay” which when viewing Camano from Stanwood is very accurate. (source: Camano Island Chamber of Commerce)
History
In the late 60's, Arthur (Art) and Doris Koch set forth to develop a small water system servicing the mid-Camano Island community known as Camano Heights. They entered into contracts with local land owners to ensure piping and service could be installed throughout the area, setting up a non-profit land trust and then forming what is now known as the Camano City Community Club, Inc. or better known as the 4 C's.
Brief Overview of Island Water Systems
Camano Island hosts a series of small water systems, meaning that there is not a public utility servicing the homes on the island as most are more familiar with in respect to receiving water and wastewater services. Our system is, like most island systems, serviced by Mount Vernon's Water and Wastewater Services.
More About Us
Governed by the Board of Trustees, our < 200 connection service provides quality drinking water to all members.
Presently we have two wells, one located off Tyler James which produces approximately 20 gallons of water per minute while our Falcon Drive well produces approximately 65 gallons of water per minute. The water is then pumped up to the plant located on Circle Drive where it is treated, filtered, and then stored in the tanks behind the facility.
Those that reside west of the plant's location are on what's referred to as a gravity fed system while those closer to the plant and to the east are on a pressurized system.
